Assalamu Alaikum and a Huge Welcome to GUMSA!
We’re so excited to have you here at the University of Glasgow and even more thrilled to invite you to join our GUMSA family! Whether you’re just starting your university journey or are returning for another year, GUMSA is here to help make your experience memorable, spiritually enriching, and full of amazing friendships.
Who are we?
Founded in 1968, GUMSA has been bringing Muslim students together for decades. We’ve grown into one of the most active Islamic societies in the UK, and we’re proud to say we’ve created a vibrant, supportive community that’s open to everyone. Our mission is simple: we want to help you practice your faith, get involved in meaningful activities, and meet other like-minded students. From weekly Jummah to bigger events like Charity Week, there’s always something happening!
Get involved – it’s easier than you think!
One of the best ways to settle in at university is to get involved. Whether you’re passionate about volunteering or just want to meet new people, GUMSA has countless opportunities for you. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Join us at Freshers' Week:
This is your chance to meet other new students and get to know our community. We’ve got everything from Quran classes and casual social events! It’s the perfect way to break the ice and make those first few friends.
Attend our regular events:
We host so many amazing events throughout the year, including social gatherings, interfaith dinners, and educational workshops. These events are a fantastic way to meet people from all backgrounds, share ideas, and build lasting friendships. You can also participate in our Ramadan Iftaar, one of the biggest gatherings of Muslims on campus.
Volunteer or join our committee:
Want to get more involved? There are loads of ways to contribute! Whether it's helping with charity work during Charity Week, volunteering for events, or running for a committee position, there’s always something for you to do. It’s a great way to develop leadership skills, gain experience, and of course, make close-knit friendships along the way.
Reach out:
Don’t be shy! We are always here to help. Whether you need advice on where to find prayer spaces, halal food spots or any issues - we’ve got your back. You can also follow us on social media to stay updated!
Making friends & building connections
Starting university can be overwhelming, but remember, GUMSA is all about community.
Be open to new experiences:
Try out different events, even if they seem outside your comfort zone. You’ll be surprised how quickly you connect with people when you’re sharing new experiences together.
Get involved early:
The more you engage, the more people you’ll meet. Whether it’s by attending events or helping out, the earlier you start getting involved, the easier it will be to form connections.
Reach out to committee members:
We’re all students just like you, and we love meeting new people. Feel free to introduce yourself or ask any questions you might have.
So what are you waiting for? Come say Salaam at one of our events or just stop by for a chat. We’re excited to meet you and help make your time at Glasgow unforgettable, insha'Allah!
