Assalamu Alaikum!
Ramadan is a special time for spiritual reflection, personal growth, and community connection, but balancing fasting and spiritual commitments alongside academic responsibilities can be challenging for students. Here are some practical tips to help students at university make the most of Ramadan:
🥘 Plan Meals Strategically
Suhoor (or Sehri) should be nutritious and filling. Foods rich in complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fiber (e.g., oats, wholegrain bread, eggs, and yogurt) provide sustained energy throughout the day.
At Iftar, break the fast gently with dates and water to rehydrate and replenish sugar levels, then follow with a balanced meal rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and grains.
Planning and prepping meals in advance can leave more time and energy to engage in worship.
💧 Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water during non-fasting hours is crucial to maintaining concentration and energy. Students should try to consume water regularly between Iftar and Suhoor, avoiding excessive caffeine and sugary drinks that can cause dehydration.
📖 Organise Academic Work Effectively
Students should identify major academic tasks, exams, and deadlines early. Creating a study timetable that accommodates prayer, meal times and spiritual goals can help maintain productivity and reduce stress. It can help you manage your workload while making the most from your Ramadan.
🏀 Stay Physically Active
Light to moderate physical activity, like short walks or gentle yoga, can help maintain energy levels and overall well-being during Ramadan. Scheduling physical activities after Iftar or before Suhoor can help prevent fatigue and dehydration - and can keep you clear headed.
⏸️ Take breaks
Quality sleep is essential during Ramadan, as fasting can impact energy levels. Students should aim for consistent sleeping patterns, even if meal and prayer times alter their usual routines.
Incorporating short breaks throughout study sessions can help manage stress and maintain mental clarity.
🕌 Engage Spiritually and Communally
Ramadan is an opportunity to deepen spiritual practices, such as increased prayer, Quran recitation, and self-reflection. Students can set achievable spiritual goals to enrich their Ramadan experience - use a ramadan planner or make your own!
Attending Iftars provided by local mosques and organisations provides valuable opportunities for building friendships and gaining spiritual motivation in friendship. Especially for international students or students away from home. It can be tough observing Ramadan alone - so get involved.
